How to End a Rehearsal Effectively: Make the Last Moments Count

I’ve written a great deal about starting a rehearsal, but it’s equally important to discuss how to end one effectively. The truth is, the way we end a rehearsal has a lasting impact on our students. It often influences how they remember the entire experience. While the opening of class sets the stage for a successful rehearsal, the closing leaves the most lasting impression on our students.

A carefully planned ending can motivate students, enhance their retention of material, and improve their overall experience. Just like the beginning of the rehearsal, it’s our responsibility as directors to have a clear, purposeful plan for the end.

Here’s my approach to effectively ending a rehearsal:

1. Be in Charge of When They Pack Up

One key principle is that we, as directors, should decide when our students pack up and put away their materials. We don’t necessarily need them to pack up at the exact end of the rehearsal. In fact, consider having them pack up a few minutes earlier, allowing the final moments of class to be focused on singing without any distractions, such as sheet music or folders.

This transition from structured rehearsal to a more relaxed singing environment can help students shift their mindset from rehearsing to enjoying the music. Ending the class with an a cappella section, for instance, can leave a memorable impact. The key is getting eye contact and making a connection.

2. Leave Them Wanting More

The goal of any great rehearsal should be to leave students excited and engaged. When they walk out humming a tune or feeling energized by the music, you know you’ve left a positive mark. One effective way to do this is by starting a song just before the class is over but the song is cutoff by the bell. The will likely get them singing as they exit the room, putting them in a good mood!

Imagine the scenario: you’re singing “Do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti…” and then… the bell rings. This cliffhanger leaves students with a desire to keep singing, creating a sense of anticipation for the next rehearsal. It’s a simple yet effective strategy to build excitement.

3. Reminders Come Before the Final Song

To avoid breaking the musical flow, it’s best to give any necessary reminders or announcements before the final song, rather than as students are rushing out the door. This will not only help them retain important information but also keep the energy of the closing moments intact.

Use the final 1-3 minutes before dismissal to share reminders for the next day, upcoming performances, or any other housekeeping items. Then, when that’s done, let the music take over again as you finish with a song.

4. End with a Smile

No matter how intense or productive the rehearsal may have been, the final moments of class should always end with warmth and connection. After the bell rings, take time to engage with your students on a personal level. Smile, make eye contact, and chat with them as they gather their things and head out.

These personal interactions show that you care about them beyond just their performance in rehearsal. It helps foster a positive, supportive atmosphere in your choir, which is crucial for building strong relationships and a sense of community.

Conclusion: The Lasting Impression Matters

The end of a rehearsal is a golden opportunity to shape how your students feel about their time with you. A well-structured closing can boost their connection to the music, keep them motivated to improve, and build anticipation for the next rehearsal. It’s not just about making sure the class runs smoothly—it’s about creating a lasting impression that keeps them excited and eager to return.

By maintaining control over when students pack up, leaving them wanting more, and using the final moments of class wisely, you ensure that your choir leaves every rehearsal feeling inspired. And always remember, a smile as they walk out the door may just be the thing they remember the most.
