The story:

I composed this piece for the Spring of 2021, one year after the pandemic began. Our choir sang it outside, fully masked and 6 feet apart.

The meaning of the song goes far beyond the pandemic. It’s all about searching inside for the light inside to guide us instead of hoping and waiting for the sun to shine. It’s the belief and trust in ourselves that offers us the purest of sunlight. When we wait for the clouds to dissipate (or for the perfect time), we miss the entire journey. It’s the journey that brings us eternal light, not the brief moment in the sun.

Searching for a light to be found in a shaded, darkened sky.

Asking for the world to return but never questioning why.

Why is sunlight what we seek?

It’s always there in all we do

Running from all hurt and pain, reverting to our youth.

Hoping nothing changes and only smiles become our truth.

Why must light be free from clouds?

It’s always there in all we do

It shines through pain, let it shine through you.

Each moment builds into the framework

Of what’s supposed to bring us to a place we’ve yet to know
