Three lanes. One destination: sight-singing.

The ear and the pencil develop separately. Lane 1 is cumulative — each skill builds on the last — while Lanes 2 and 3 develop in parallel, on paper. Every resource below targets a lane.

Lane 1 · The Ear

Aural Development

Cumulative — in this order

1 Match Pitch
2 Sing a Scale In Tune
3 Steps vs. Skips
4 Sing Every Diatonic Leap
Lane 2 · The Eye

Labeling Pitch

On paper — develops in parallel

Label pitches on the staff in abbreviated solfège
Lane 3 · The Pulse

Rhythm

On paper & out loud — develops in parallel

Label rhythm on the staff
Perform labeled rhythm

The 2-out-of-3 Method

Before singers can truly sight-sing, they combine any two lanes at a time:

Ear + EyeSing the pitches they've labeled on the staff — without timing
Eye + PulseSpeak the labeled pitches in rhythm — without singing
Ear + PulseSing familiar patterns in rhythm — without notation
All three lanes together = successful sight-singing

Singers can attempt sight-singing at any point along the way — but major success comes when all three lanes merge. And no singer is actually tone-deaf: when each skill is isolated, assessed, and developed, every student improves.

Aural Training

The ear-training exercise students use for four consecutive years — from the best-selling original sheet to advanced minor-mode training, with a rubric to measure every singer's growth.

Simple. Clear. Double-duty.

Every self-assessment is simple and clear enough for singers to complete in moments — and here's the real secret: grade your students with the exact same simplified approach. When your grading gets simpler, your students achieve more. Three questions every director asks:

"Won't they just give themselves an A?"

Not when the rubric makes success concrete. Each level describes an observable behavior — there's nothing vague to inflate. Students score against clear descriptions, and your occasional spot-check keeps honesty the easy path. Accuracy itself becomes part of the skill.

"How does doing them regularly help?"

Repetition turns reflection into habit. When singers name their preparation, posture, and participation daily or weekly, the rubric's expectations become their internal voice — they start correcting themselves mid-rehearsal, before you ever have to.

"What's in it for me?"

Your grading workload shrinks while your gradebook gets stronger. Students generate the evidence; you validate it. Choir earns respect as a "real class" with real assessment — and you go home on time.

Grading this way is taught in the How To Grade For Growth In Your Choir! course — and every product below is included free with Collective Premium.
