Here are the 4 tangible steps to develop your student’s ear.

These 4 steps are NOT all or nothing skills; each one must be assessed and then developed. Fortunately, each activity can be fast, focused, and fun!
How it works:
Firstly we teach all students to match pitch. Secondly, all students learn to sing a scale in tune. Next they learn to differentiate step-wise motion (scales) from skips (tri-ads). Finally, singers learn how to break apart the scale and sing every diatonic leap. As a result of these four steps, all singers will improve exponentially; they will have the aural skills to effectively sight-sing and hold their part.
Here are the 4 steps:
- Matching Pitch – this begins with a student who appears to be tone-deaf and gives the student and teacher tangible steps to match pitch throughout their expanded vocal range.
- Singing a scale in tune – this begins with a student who cannot singe the range of an octave, and moves through students who sing so sharp or flat that they do not reach “do”, and ends with a perfectly sung, in-tune scale.
- Alternating solfege patterns – this is the simplest of all the steps and yet you would be surprised at how many singers struggle with this. The ability for a singer to alternate between skipping and step-wise motion determines if they can recognize the difference between skips and step-wise motion in their head. The simple exercise has 5 steps of tangible development
- Aural Training Solfege Exercise – this exercise is the MOST EFFECTIVE tool for developing a singer’s inner ear. It can be a fun exercise and it is something that you can use with your students week after week, year after year.
What you are receiving in this package
A. Matching Pitch Rubric – a 5 Step Rubric for evaluating and developing growth in each singer
B. Scale Rubric – a 5 step Rubric for assessing and developing growth in each singer
C. Singing alternating solfege patterns of “Do, Mi, Sol” and “Do, Re, Mi” – a 5 step Rubric for assessing and developing growth in each singer
D. The Aural Training Sheet – the one-page tool that culminates the first three skills together and you can use every day, year after year.
E. The “New” Aural Training Sheet in Major & Minor – new major exercises with the transition into relative minor
E. Aural Training Sheet Rubric – a 5 step Rubric for assessing developing growth in each singer
When singers reach a score of 4 out of 5 on each of these individual rubrics, they will have developed the aural training skills necessary to sight-sing. As a result, they will be able to hold their part!
