Oseh Shalom is a call for peace. This original setting of “Oseh Shalom” is a joint quest to stop fighting and to share our Earth peacefully. As continuous conflicts around have been going on continuously throughout the world for thousands of years, the ability to create an eternal state of peace seems nearly impossible. Any “current” situation could be solved and/or easily mediated, should both parties meet with a mutual goal of resolution; peace, however, is far more complicated, as those who have felt “wronged” carry the burden passed on from previous generations. With so many people on both sides of a conflict carrying-on past legacy, a current resolution usually lacks the comfort of a definitive and absolute resolution. -

The story:
Unborn Lullabye was written for my daughter, Lyla, before she was born. It is a lullabye that tells the story and shares the dreams that a first-time parent may have for their little one. I composed this piece over the summer of 2015. My wife was due with Lyla on October 6th. I knew I had planned to take off a few weeks from my high school choral position when Lyla was born. On September 21st, I had my first Monday evening rehearsal of the year with my Mixed Choir. I surprised them with Unborn Lullabye, which they loved. They learned the first version of it in about 30 minutes. My intent was to have it ready by the time Lyla was ready. I was so happy that my choir loved the lullabye and looked forward to continuing working on the piece all week. When I arrived home at 10pm, on a high, I sat down with my wife on the couch, sharing my experience of the lullabye..........she responded by sharing that she was having contractions. Twelve hours later, Lyla was born. -

This SATB/Unaccompanied Dreidel choir arrangement is a lot of fun to sing and to watch. There are very few happy, uptempo songs for Hanukkah. This is a winner. It is easy to learn and adds humor and diversity to any holiday program and will be a real crowd-pleaser! This piece can also be sung when caroling by eliminating the last section, or it can be attached to the end of the famous “Carol of the Bells” as seen in the linked video below. -

Holocaust Remembrance:
This piece is a choral setting of a poem by Dan Pagis, who spent much of his adolescence in a concentration camp. This poem uses historical and biblical themes to cast light on violence and injustice. The words are simple and few, but they are powerful and rich with multiple meanings. -
Spring Comes
Spring Comes is a celebration of the season written in the style of a Renaissance madrigal. The words are a playful echo of the lighthearted texts used in madrigals of that genre, and the piece is predominately polyphonic. The music is not difficult to learn, even though it looks and sounds complicated. It is an excellent piece for teaching polyphonic texture, and an impressive addition to any concert program.

This popular poem is beautifully and carefully set to create a powerful image. The voice-leading and repetition is perfect for a developing choir but the depth of the piece will work with a refined high school, college, or community ensemble as well. -

There is no black and white. Life it fluid and we dance together for short periods of time, but continue to move in our own direction. Each passing stranger is important and we should treasure them, as everyone is merely a passing stranger. -

A work for 2 part young voices with piano accompaniment. A nostalgic and tonal melodic setting of Charles Kingsley's lovely and simple reflection of youth versus old age. One may want to consider utilizing "Tell Me" as the opening selection in a three works presentation for high voices by Jeffrey Kaufman. The second would be "Young and Old" and closing with "Frolic".

"Tell Me" is a work for two part high voices, with optional divisi. A whimsical work challenging both harmonically and rhythmically. The text asks (by a rather precocious child), some strangely interesting questions with a demand that someone "Tell Me"! One may want to consider utilizing "Tell Me" as the opening selection in a three works presentation for high voices by Jeffrey Kaufman. The second would be "Young and Old" and closing with "Frolic".

Twenty-Four Hallelujahs, for SATB chorus with piano, is a simple song of praise in a rich harmonic setting. The single word of text, “Hallelujah,” is repeated in a number of variations and rhythmic schemes that deliver nuances of meaning in a way that the text alone cannot. At times the text is contemplative; in others it is jubilant and even forceful.

A fun upbeat work for SAT. "Light the Lamps Up Lamplighter" has a text by Eleanor Farjeon, the same poet that created "Morning Has Broken" which became an important song for the famous vocalist "Cat Stevens". With optional drums, bass and synthesized brass/strings, this work, with challenging rhythmic elements, will be enjoyed by singers and audience alike.
